Hey folks, it's been a busy week. Shout out to all the counter-protests that have seen huge turnouts where neo-nazi's have tried to get their message out. We have a lot of links and resources this week.

One bit of news is that our tag guru [personal profile] redbird is going to have limited internet time for the next week or so. That means it may take a bit longer than the usual super-speedy service for your posts to be tagged and new tags added. (Remember: you can always add existing tags to your posts yourselves.)

Housekeeping (the usual stuff)
Reminder that we have a suggestion post if there’s a topic that you’d like to see discussed but would like to ask the mods to look into. This can be anything from general information, or a how-to-do-a-thing, or something you may want to discuss as a community. Folks are welcome to post directly to the comm as always, but if you’re not comfortable/don’t have spoons, we can help too.

As we don't always get the time to pull things out of the suggestions post into their own separate posts, it may be worth checking every week (or tracking the post) to see if there's any new information you're interested in.

Also if you need help with tags, PM [personal profile] redbird, who is our tag guru.

Points out that a pardon would represent an official endorsement and back-pat for systematic violations of the rights of people of colour.

Indivisble: Stand in Solidarity with Charlottesville - Find an Event

The Nation: Here’s What You Can Do After Charlottesville

Indivisible: Are Your Members of Congress Doing Enough to Respond to the Charlottesville Terrorist Attack? -- though this is several days old and therefore lacks a script for HOLY FUCK THE PRESIDENT IS DEFENDING NEO-NAZIS (EVEN MORE) WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?

SPLC releases new edition of Ten Ways to Fight Hate guide after Charlottesville attack

Politico: GOP chairmen resist hearings on white supremacy

They don't want it. Demand it.

[tumblr.com profile] plaidadder: Three Democratic members of the House have introduced a censure resolution.

You can read the text here.

Censure is a formal reprimand. It is not legally binding, but it is rare, and Sends a Message. MoveOn.org originally organized around a campaign to get Congress to censure Clinton instead of impeaching him.

This may be an attempt to accomplish something less difficult than impeachment; or it may be a trial run to see how many Republicans are ready to jump from the Trump Train.

ETA: Politico: Pelosi endorses censure of Trump over Charlottesville response -- apparently at least 79 Democrats have signed.

Not directly Charlottesville-related, but interesting and could be worth asking your reps to support:

H.R.1987 - Oversight Commission on Presidential Capacity Act

To steal Wikipedia's explanation: "This bill would replace the Cabinet as the body that, together with the Vice President, determines whether Section 4 should be invoked. Under the bill, an eleven-member commission would conduct an examination of the President when directed to do so by a concurrent resolution of the Congress."

(Which, basically, shifts the power to forcibly 25th-Amendment the President back towards Congress to a greater degree, as opposed to depending entirely on the Cabinet which that President apppointed.)

People for the American Way has one-page fact sheets (great for tabling and canvassing!) about, e.g., the Mueller Russia investigation, voter suppression, separation of church and state, and opposing white supremacist hate:

The Women's March organization is holding a convention in Detroit on October 27-29 (Friday-Sunday): "an inaugural conference that will bring thousands of women and femmes of all backgrounds" together for "three days of workshops, strategy sessions, inspiring forums and intersectional movement building." Base registration fee is $295 but there are scholarships available.

I C&Pd the registration link, if it doesn't work try womensmarch.com.

The "alt-right" (aka totally literal Nazis) will be rallying in multiple cities across America this Saturday and at various other times this month.

There doesn't seem to be any central clearing house of information, so if you'd like to join a counterprotest, I suggest googling with the name of your city. I did that and found that there is an alt-right protest in Los Angeles this Saturday (outside Google, to protest them firing the sexist employee), and a counterprotest which I will be joining. Details on my DW if you're in the area.

History is a record of what happened, not the (much shorter) record of GOOD things that happened. So my advice to courts and legislatures considering Confederate monument cases would be to impose a mandatory injunction keeping the monument there--with a plaque attached saying something like "NAME fought to defend the South's heritage of persecution and exploitation, a disgrace to humanity that exists to this day. NEVER FORGET. Paid for by Black Lives Matter and the NAACP."

For opposing Trump's version of a renegotiated NAFTA:

Tell your Representative to oppose Trump's NAFTA re-do!
Call 202-224-3121 to be connected with your Representative's office.

**********************************

Here is a sample script of what to say:
Hello, my name is ________ and I am calling from ________. I am calling to urge Representative ________ to publicly oppose Donald Trump’s plan to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement. We need a new NAFTA but not one negotiated by Trump that will be worse for people and the planet than the old one.
I am counting on Rep _______ to represent us in Congress and to stop Trump’s plan to hamstring effective regulation of cancer- causing chemicals and to preclude the adoption of similar legislation by Congress.
Trump’s new NAFTA also threatens to stop future action to save bees that are dying at alarming rates. Scientists have found that neonicotinoid pesticides, manufactured by Bayer and Syngenta, are a leading driver in global bee declines and putting our food system and agricultural economy at risk.
I therefore urge Representative _______ to speak out against Trump’s plan to renegotiate NAFTA. We need a new NAFTA when we get a new and completely different President.
Thank you.
**********************************
Thank you for telling your Representative to oppose the new NAFTA!

Expanded version as an article on Medium

I know there are lots of other link lists and recommendations for places to donate floating around, so maybe people could add them in comments?

And, obviously, US people could usefully call their reps and ask them to explicitly condemn white supremacist terrorism (if your reps have already done so, you can phone or send them a card to thank them!).

Welcome, grammar fans, to another installment of Commonly Confused Words. Today we are looking at brake and break. These two words not only sound exactly alike, they are both also used as a noun or a verb, and can even overlap somewhat in meaning. So, how do you know which to use when? Let's take a look, with a little help from our friends from Hawaii Five-0. )
From [tumblr.com profile] delurkingdetective's post here:

If you’re worried about nuclear war, one actual thing you can do to prevent it is to call your representatives and ask them to cosponsor the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act. It would require Trump (and any future president) to get congressional approval to use nuclear weapons as a first strike (as opposed to retaliation after someone uses them first). It was proposed back in January and seems really, really relevant these days.

You can check if your reps are cosponsors here:

https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/669/cosponsors
https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/senate-bill/200/cosponsors

If they’re not a cosponsor, call and ask them to become one.

If they’re already a cosponsor, call them and thank them, and ask them to release a press release reaffirming their support. The more news there is about this, the more likely the GOP leadership will feel pressured to actually deal with this.

And (idea inspired by [personal profile] recessional): if they're already cosponsoring/speaking out, you can send them a thank you card. Representatives get very little positive reinforcement, so any bit they get makes an impact. Reinforce the behaviour you want to encourage!

It's been a pretty quiet week in the comm (wish we could say the same for the blabbermouth Minority President…), but I'm sure you've all been busy with your acts of resistance!
