actual life notes (tm)
The other night I dreamed about a country that had a ceremonial holiday where people conducted mock sword battles with trees. All the trees were scarred by these battles except those on the far southern shore. These were exempt for an unremembered reason.
My new falling-asleep show is The Staying In Podcast, which is just men with soothing voices talking about board games. (They also talk about video games and RPGs, but they do it all in these very level, gentle, British voices. It's like a warm bath of non-rhotic pronunciation.)
I'm also listening to Party of One, which is a lovely actual-play RPG podcast whose premise is that the host plays a one-off, one-on-one game session with one other player, often an indie game designer, often queer, trans, and/or nonbinary. I am quickly developing a palate for what kinds of RPGs (or at least what kinds of playthroughs) I like. I have found so many beautiful games already.
It's research. It's all research.
My current dream is to found an RPG play-and-discuss group at work. If social gatherings ever feel safe again, I'll book a room for it -- otherwise I guess I'll use Zoom or possibly succumb to one of the RPG-targeted sites. (Any suggestions?)
My dreamier dream is to go on Party of One and play Ten Candles with Jeff Stormer.

The stores here have some empty shelves because of supply-line issues from the flooding and road damage, but nothing catastrophic. As usual -- I've noticed this throughout the pandemic -- the biggest stores have the emptiest shelves. (Of course they have the most shelves, too. But what I mean is that the shortages seem more indicative of purchase patterns than absolute unavailability of goods.)
The grocery store and the liquor store were both teeth-gnashingly crowded today, which I guess makes sense, but I hope to avoid all stores for the next week if that is the case. Luckily, I'm broke.
I bought some more paper masks -- my stock badly needed refreshing. I have my cloth ones, but I like to seed every pocket in every bag and coat with backup masks in case I forget.
In marks of industriousness in this weird rain-soaked light-starved end-of-year semi-doze, I did laundry and chopped up a remarkable number of carrots to freeze for the Future. I'm thinking carrot soup and maybe carrot souffle à la Anaïs Nin.
Very behind on all seasonal cards, which is too bad, because I have a Nice Little Thing to put in them.
There is some thought that it will snow on Monday. Luckily, I am not flying until Wednesday, so that should be... fine?

Wishing you better dreams for the solstice.

I can't mentally cope with the idea that in-person gatherings might never feel safe again.

It's too cold here for me only to have outdoor gatherings, and I don't really know how to live with that.
