I think I have a weird thing in that I didn't come out (for whatever value of come out you want) until I was almost 30, and I was at my punkest in my 20s. So while I was very much in the queer punk scene because that was the good punk scene, it was more guys in the scene, and I was more about the music and politics than sexuality. That said, it was an intensely liberating, important space for me.
And now I'm old and it's covid and the city is horribly gentrified, and the heart of Toronto's queer punk scene has been dead for 12 years and no one really ever stepped into his Docs. Going to a bar seems like one of those distant wishes. Certainly there are queer bars—one of the first places I went when they relaxed restrictions last summer was a queer bar—but that potentiality, that delight in amateurism, is gone. I hope the young people can find their way back to it, at least.
