I just read this! Yes, the woman was a middle-aged musician (classical and folk) and free spirit, with a grown daughter. Adventures read more like a spy thriller, with conspiracy and fraud and computer crime.

The dragon is supposed to be Chinese, but he's searching for a master (in a Tao or Zen sort of tradition). We see him mainly in human form. A wise person in Taiwan said that he'd meet his teacher in the Bay Area, which is where the book takes place.

Also depicts geeks/nerds rather sweetly.
