Corey Alexander (@tgstonebutch on Twitter) has died. I didn't know them well -- mostly from Twitter discussion and their reviews and essays -- but I relied on them as an absolutely ethical critical voice about romance, and the loss of that voice feels like a physical blow. They were one of the people about whom I could say "at least this person exists."

On Twitter, I'm following the struggle of their friends to deal with all of the bureaucracy of death, including the extra struggle of not knowing exactly what happened and of trying to get the county to recognize nonbinary gender on a death certificate (ETA: @courtneymilan says that since 2017, by California law, this should be possible, but the software has not been updated to allow this option.)

This is such a powerful feeling. I'm glad the people exist who are fighting for Corey to get the recognition they deserve, even as I'm sorry that fight has to happen at all.

I knew them only by their writing, but their death has been going like a shockwave through my friend groups, and I hate it. I have been saying their memory for a blessing, because it is true, but I would prefer their life were still a blessing, too.

It's so awful. I didn't know them at all but I enjoyed their work, and it was awful seeing "Corey's funeral" mentioned on Twitter and going to work out if it was that Corey :( Sending hugs.
